Do It managed a couple of early chances, with Graham causing trouble and clipping the bar early on and two others frittered away. Those early chances gone the action moved to the other end where the Latino team began to carve out the openings and stretch Do Its Back line. Eventually the first goal came only to be equalised from a Do It corner. Latino MOTM Cristian started to cause mayhem on the wing though and it wasn’t long before the Latinos were back in front. A couple of yellow cards for Do It (Ian didn’t deserve, his but Dan did) didn’t help Do Its cause and meant that the midfield battle was starting to go Latinos way.

Several chances went begging again for Do It and too often the ball was given away cheaply to the Latinos who rarely let a pass go astray. Some wonderful moments of skill, including an unstoppable first time volley for the Latinos and a consolation top corner effort from Al but at the end of the day Latinos were in total control and if they keep playing like that will remain so through the season.

It was nice and cool Saturday afternoon and Sabor Latino arrived in one caravan to the Home Pitch of the Lions, Sekolah Global Jaya. Upon entering the main gate, there is an electronic billboard that read “Welcome Latinos to the Home Ground of the Mighty Lions”. Definitely a very nice touch by which the hospitality was felt from the time we arrived.

The game started pretty much on time. Sabor Latino was barely able to complete 12 players. We actually included as an additional substitute Alejandro’s 12 year old son Diego who made his debut against the Mighty Lions. Well done Diego. The Lions started with a very strong defensive strategy that proved to be very hard to crack by Sabor Latino. The size of the pitch, as mentioned by Damian before, was a factor for Sabor Latino. Hernan had a very close miss and that showed a bit of frustration by Sabor Latino. Finally, with some patience, Sabor Latino was able to score 5 goals in the first half countered by an excellent goal by Ruben. The Lion’s Indo Goalkeeper made some terrific saves.

On the second half, it was Saka’s time to guard the goal of the Mighty Lion, which he did very well. Sabor Latino kept the attacks coming and was able to capitalize on 6 more occasions. The Mighty Lions were very incisive on the right flank with John and on the left flank by Justin (which made him the MOM) and in one swoosh counterattack, found Sabor Latino’s defense reduced to one man and Rob capitalized on that giving Lions its second goal.

The game ended and both sides shook hands and greeted each other. The game was played in very good spirit. The number of yellow cards in the game showed the nature of the match, as the cards were given for a couple of late-timing tackles. Despite the yellow cards, the game was played with a true sense of the JIFL: camaraderie and good intentions. Once again, we struggled with the referee and his decisions for both teams, hence the low rating.

Sabor Latino would like to extend its gratitude to the Mighty Lions for their hospitality and goodwill. It was a pleasure to visit their Home Ground and hope to be able to reciprocate their hospitality at our Home Ground on the Second Round of the JIFL.

Dear Nico and Dale,

Below please find below the Match Report from Tuesday night.

Home Team: Wanderers
Date: Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
Place: ISCI
Time: 20:00

Goals Sabor Latino: Julico 1, Hernan 1
Goals Wanderers: Fandi Achmad 1

YELLOW CARDS SABOR LATINO: (3) Hernan, Alejandro, Pedro
YELLOW CARDS WANDERERS: (4) Saphou, Ebang, Michele, Thomas
MOM Sabor Latino: Cristian Gonzalez
MOM Wanderers: Jules Onana
REFEREE: Erwin. RATING: 10/10

On a perfect Jakarta eve weather, the highly expected match started with a slight delay of 10 minutes due to a complete mess of traffic in Lebak Bulus. It had rained hard since early in the morning which insinuated that the game could be canceled like many other matches in ISCI should the rain persisted throughout the afternoon. Fortunately, it didn’t and the ISCI pitch was in perfect playing conditions.

The Wanderers were wearing their new uniform, at least new for me since I had not seen them play this season yet. A very nice uniform indeed. Both teams were properly dressed and I personally liked Erwin’s initiative to have both teams line up before the game facing the tribune and showing our appreciation to the spectators that came to watch the game (not that many really) and then shake hands with the other team. It was a nice and refreshing change. Kudos to Erwin.

The game started and for the first 15 minutes the Wanderers attacked intensely and their condition of playing in their home pitch was latent. In those 15 minutes the Wanderers knocked on Sabor Latino’s goal 3 times with attempts from Fandi, Thomas and Claudio. After that, Sabor Latino settled down and found its game and started composing some compelling attacks but the Wanderers back-4 prevented any of the attempts from making it into the goal. Probably around the 30th minute, a nicely created play in the midfield of Sabor Latino and a crafty one-two between Julico and Hernan, allowed Julico to go into the area and score on Jules (0-1). Only 5 minutes after that, in a quick counter attack, Manny made a great pass to Fandi who shot with his left foot and scored on Sabor Latino (1-1). That marked the end of the first half.

The match resumed in the second half with pretty much the same script. Both teams had some opportunities that were saved either by the defenders or the goalkeepers. It seemed very likely that the match would end up in a draw. But with 10 minutes to go, Cristian Gonzalez dribbled on the left and executed a perfect center which found Hernan’s head in the middle of the area, an opportunity that Hernan did not waste, heading the ball into the net. The remainder of the match, saw the Wanderers trying to even the score but Sabor Latino was able to maintain the lead and the game ended.

From Sabor Latino and from a very personal perspective, the game was a very rewarding experience. Despite the rumors going around or maybe some expectations from some people on how the game was expected to go, it was comforting to see that the match was played on the basis of mutual respect, sportsmanship, the love for the game and friendship. The match was intense indeed however at no point there was any display of bad blood or bad intentions. I commend the Wanderers on a very strong team, especially the defense. A truly enjoyable match to play and to watch -I got a yellow card towards the end of the game so I did watch it for about 10 mins.

Pedro (Sabor Latino)

To the JIFL managers
This is an open letter to inform everyone of my interpretation what transpired last Saturday, 14 November at Global Jaya International School in a game between Lions and Arario (Korea).

In the 15th minute of the second half the Korean team walked off the field and refused to start again. At this stage the Lions were leading 2 – 1. Up until this point there had been a lot verbal interaction, especially when a free kick was given to the Lions. On these occasions several Korean players would surround the referee complaining. Fortunately for the referee, most of his decisions were in the favour of the Korean team, so they could definitely not feel hard done by the referee. Overall the game was very clean in terms of no bad fouls from either team.

So the decision to quit the game in the second half was somewhat of a suprise for the referee, the Lions and also many of the Korean players themselves. The ball had gone behind the goal for a goal kick to the Lions. Our goal keeper, Sakai, retrieved the ball and walked back to take the kick. Some Korean players began to complain to the referee that the goal keeper was time wasting. The referee then indicated to them he was stopping his watch. Then one of the players from the sideline called the rest of the players off the field. It was obvious to me that many of the Korean team did not want to leave the field at this point. But they did.

A statement was made by one of the Korean players when asked why they left the field..”We came here to play, not fight”. I want to make it very clear that there was no fighting in the match and, as i mentioned earlier, the game was quite clean in nature.

What should be quite a laughable situation, unfortunately, is not. I will be interested to hear from the JIFL chairperson as to what outcomes will follow.

Regards
Richard Henry
